Jaw Reduction

Jaw Reduction Surgery / Jaw Shaving in Bangkok, Thailand

The jaw is one of the immediate indicators people subconsciously or consciously use to gender one another. Males tend to have larger, wider jaws, and females have narrower, more refined jaws. Jaw reduction surgery is usually a fundamental part of FFS as it reshapes the jaw into a slimmer and more feminine appearance. The surgeon uses their extensive experience to reshape the jaw, chin, and mandibles to make a beautiful, instantly recognizable female lower face. The jaw is an essential part of a beautiful V-line face. It should not be too slim or too broad; only a slight curve is needed to create an attractive look.

How do you choose the surgeon for jaw reduction?

  1. Jaw reduction is complicated. The surgeon should be a facial surgery specialist, particularly in facial feminization surgery, as it differs from many other typical procedures and requires immense skill and experience. They must be a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Maxillofacial Surgeon
  2. Check the surgeon's experience and expertise. Facial bone surgery is very complicated. Without understanding and thousands of previous successful surgeries, patients risk jawbone fractures, nerve tears, and loss of jaw function. The surgeon should be qualified and verified as an expert in this field.

Preparing for Surgery

  • Consult with the surgeon about goals and get to know risks and potential complications.
  • Physical examination or lab tests, chest X-ray, blood test, and EKG if you are over 40 years old.
  • Stop smoking for at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, Motrin, or Ibuprofen. Vitamins or herbs that interfere with blood clotting at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Plan for your recovery. Chewing will be difficult for up to a week after surgery. It would be best if you had some soup, liquid food, and nutrition supplements prepared.

A Good Candidate for Jaws Reduction

You may be the right candidate if you:

  • Want to improve the lower face,  jaws, chin, and lower mandible.
  • Have a wide jaw and round face.
  • Have a long lower jaw.
  • Have lower flat jaws.
  • Your facial growth is complete.
  • Physically healthy.
  • Have realistic expectations.
  • Doesn't smoke.
  • Knows and understands the risks and potential complications.

Preparing for Jaw Reduction

  • Consult the surgeon about suitable procedures and what they can achieve.
  • Physical examination, blood test, chest X-ray, electrolytes, HIV
  • CT scan
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol for at least one week before surgery.
  • Stop some medicines, vitamins, or herbs that interfere with blood clotting, such as aspirin.

The procedure of Jaw Reduction

The operation takes 1-2 hours, depending on the thickness of the jawbone. The steps of jaw reduction are as follows:

  1. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
  2. The incision is intraoral (inside the mouth) to hide the scar.
  3. Removal of excess bone/muscle/fat.

Postoperative Care

It is essential to take good care postoperatively:

  • To prevent infection, use mouthwash frequently.
  • Keep the head elevated as much as possible to reduce swelling.
  • Wear provided compression bandage at all times for three days and when sleeping for one month.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for a month after surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least two weeks after surgery.
  • Keep any follow-up appointments with your surgeon to check the healing process and to ask any questions you may have.

You can return to work 7-10 days after surgery, but some swelling may still occur. You can resume exercising four weeks after surgery.

Risks and Complications

Jawbone reduction, like other facial reduction procedures, is low risk but does involve common risks such as infection, bleeding, blood clots, bruising, swelling, injury to the surrounding tissue and nerves or blood vessels, and allergic reactions to anesthesia. Risks that are unique to this procedure include:

  • Numbness
  • Decreased skin sensation over the surgical area
  • Tightness when opening the mouth
  • Zygomatic arch fracture
  • Unstable zygomatic bone
  • Zygomatic bone and arch malposition after surgery
  • Revision surgery may be required

Jaw Reduction Surgery Results

The results of the jaw reduction procedure are permanent. Swelling after surgery is joint. It will take several days before you can remove the compression bandage and enjoy the results. When the swelling has gone, the new contours of your jawline will appear. Swelling will last several months and will steadily improve all the time.

Why Jawline can identify gender?

The shape of a jawline plays a significant role in how we perceive a person's gender. A strong, defined jawline is often considered masculine, while a softer, less defined jawline is perceived as feminine.

‘This perception is heavily influenced by societal norms and gender stereotypes ingrained in our culture over time.’

  • A masculine jawline is typically characterized by a square or rectangular shape with a sharp angle at the jawline. This shape is often associated with strength, power, and masculinity. Men with a strong jawline are usually perceived as more confident and assertive, which are traits traditionally associated with masculinity.
  • A feminine jawline is typically characterized by a softer, rounder shape with a more gradual angle at the jawline. This shape is often associated with delicate features, femininity, and beauty. Women with a softer jawline are usually perceived as more delicate and feminine, which aligns with traditional gender norms.

‘Gender identity and physical characteristics are two different things; gender identity is an inner feeling and understanding of oneself as male, female, neither, or a combination of male/female; it's not based on physical characteristics.’

In conclusion, a jawline's shape impacts perceptions of gender, but it is not a definitive indicator of a person's gender. Society's gender norms and stereotypes play a significant role in shaping these perceptions, and it's essential to recognize that not all individuals conform to these traditional perceptions.

At Kamol Cosmetic Hospital: We are committed to providing inclusive and respectful care for all patients, regardless of their gender identity or physical characteristics.
